The book starts with describing a shooting that takes place in Washington D.C. and then moves on to the main protagonist Clay Carter to whom this case is assigned. Clay Carter works for the DA office with little pay and is dissatisfied with his job, has a girl friend whose parents he hates. He unsuccessfully tries to find out the reasons behind the killing for the case new case that he has been assigned.Then he meets a mystery man who introduces himself as the fireman for a company that made a drug for drug addicts whose side-affects had caused the killing instinct in the defendant. The mystery man asks Clay to take up similar cases and pay compensation to the people who have suffered due to this drug and for this he asks him to open his own firm and agrees to pay a fee of $15 million for this. Clay accepts the deal, resigns from the DA’s office, opens his own office and also employs 3 of his friends.The mysterious man then tells him about the affects of a drug from a company “Acerhman Labs” that is a rival to their company and asks him to file an action class suit against them. This starts the rise of Clay to the “King of Torts”, his change in lifestyle, habits and love life.
The book describes how large class action suits are filed, the huge amounts lawyers make from these cases and also gives an insight into their lifestyles.
A good fiction book that also gives an indepth knowledge of mass tort cases and lawyers along with a gripping story.
